RevPoints: How Long Valid?
RevPoints carry defined validity periods that determine how long you can hold points before they expire — understanding these timelines and Revolut's redemption logic helps preserve accumulated value.
Standard Validity Period
Each RevPoint remains active in your account for three full years from its receipt date. This 36-month validity applies universally across every earning method: transaction-based points from card spending, bonus points from plan upgrades, challenge completion rewards, and purchased points from Spare Change round-ups all maintain identical three-year lifespans.
The validity countdown begins when points officially post to your account, not when you completed the earning activity. If a purchase takes 48 hours to process and award points, your three-year window starts when points appear in your balance, not when you made the purchase.
The interface of the Revolut app highlights points approaching expiration — typically flagging balances within three months of their deadline — ensuring you receive advance notice rather than discovering expired points after the fact.
After three years, points disappear permanently from your account without exception, extension, or reinstatement possibility. Customer service cannot extend validity deadlines or restore expired points regardless of circumstances.
Automated Age-Based Redemption
When redeeming RevPoints for any purpose — airline mile conversions, shopping discounts, hotel bookings, gift cards — Revolut automatically redeems your oldest points first. This age-based sequencing protects points nearest expiration, ensuring newer points with longer remaining validity stay in your account.
The system provides no option to manually override this sequence. Revolut determines which specific points get redeemed based entirely on age, eliminating the risk of accidentally using fresh points while older ones expire unused in your balance.
This automation dramatically simplifies point management. You don't need to track which earning dates correspond to which expiry dates — Revolut handles complexity automatically, letting you focus on finding valuable redemption opportunities rather than administrative tracking.
Validity Extension Strategy
One workaround extends point utility beyond RevPoints' three-year limitation: transferring to airline programs with more favorable expiration policies.
For example, the British Airways Executive Club provides an excellent example. Its Avios miles maintain validity indefinitely as long as your account shows any activity — earning or spending miles — within any 36-month window. Transfer RevPoints nearing expiration into your Executive Club account, and those converted miles potentially gain years of additional usability.
This strategy particularly benefits travelers accumulating points toward premium cabin redemptions requiring substantial mile balances. Rather than rushing to use expiring RevPoints on mediocre redemptions, convert them to Avios where they remain accessible indefinitely (with minimal activity) until you've gathered sufficient miles for optimal bookings.
The catch: this only works if you actually plan to redeem airline miles. Converting RevPoints to Avios just to avoid expiration, then letting those Avios expire from inactivity, accomplishes nothing.
