What happens to RevPoints if you close your Revolut account?
Last verified: 17 July 2026
You lose them all. Closing a Revolut account forfeits every RevPoint on it — earned and purchased alike — with no compensation. Downgrading your plan, by contrast, keeps your points. If you're thinking of leaving, the order of operations matters: redeem or transfer first, close second. Here's the full picture, including the 14-day rule for purchased points and the new EEA negative-balance clause.
Closing vs downgrading
| Close the account | Downgrade the plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Your RevPoints | All forfeited — earned and purchased | Kept |
| Future earning | None | Continues at the lower plan's base rate |
| When it makes sense | Only after you've emptied your points balance | You want to stop paying a plan fee but keep the programme |
If your goal is just to stop paying for Metal or Premium, downgrading to Standard keeps your balance intact and keeps it earning at 1 point per £10 — see the plan comparison.
The redeem-before-closing checklist
1. Transfer points you value to an airline partner. Points moved to one of the 16 airline programmes (or to Accor ALL) live in that programme's own account — once transferred, they aren't affected by what happens to your Revolut account.
2. Redeem the rest. Gift cards (~0.7p per point) or spending points at checkout via Revolut Pay clear the balance in ways you'll actually use — see the full redemption ranking.
3. Only then close the account. Anything left on the balance at closure is gone.
Purchased points: the 14-day rule
If you bought points, purchases can be refunded within a 14-day cooling-off window. That protection applies to purchased points only — earned points have no refund route — and note that when you spend points, purchased points are redeemed first.
New for EEA accounts: the negative-balance clause
Under the EEA terms wave rolling out in July 2026 — effective 10 July 2026 in Iceland and from 19 July 2026 in the Netherlands — Revolut may deduct RevPoints to offset a negative account balance, valuing them at up to €0.02 per point. UK customers aren't affected — the UK remains on the terms dated 13 March 2026. Full details in our news & changes log.
FAQ
Do I lose purchased RevPoints too if I close my account?
Yes — closure forfeits earned and purchased points alike. The only protection for purchased points is the 14-day cooling-off refund window after buying them.
Does downgrading my Revolut plan lose my points?
No. Downgrading keeps your RevPoints balance; it just changes your future earn rate. Only closing the account forfeits points.
Are points I already transferred to an airline safe?
Yes. Once transferred, miles sit in the airline programme's own account and aren't affected by closing your Revolut account.
Can Revolut take points from my balance?
In the EEA, under the July 2026 terms wave (from 19 July in the Netherlands), Revolut may deduct points to offset a negative account balance at up to €0.02 per point. Points also expire three years after earning wherever you are.
