London to Tokyo with Avios, RevPoints or Amex points

The official Avios map currently lists London airports to Tokyo Haneda from 38,500 Avios + £120 one way in economy, per person. At British Airways’ verified 1:1 rate, that floor starts at 38,500 RevPoints or UK Amex Membership Rewards points.

Verified 19 July 2026: this is an HND-only planning floor, not a live quote or reward-seat availability claim. It is not a Narita price, a Japan Airlines partner-flight price or a connecting-itinerary price. Search the exact airport, carrier and date before transferring.

HND, NRT and the 355/360-day split

Airport scope and booking window change which published fact is safe to use. Neither opening window preserves a seat for you.

Haneda versus Narita

  • The 38,500 Avios + £120 BA floor applies to HND only.
  • Current BA and JAL direct London services are LHR–HND.
  • Finnair may show HND or NRT via HEL; Qatar and Flying Blue require the exact airport returned by the current search.

When searches open

  • British Airways reward bookings can be made up to 355 days before departure.
  • Finnair-operated Classic awards become bookable 360 days before departure.
  • Neither rule guarantees a particular Tokyo seat, cabin or complete connecting itinerary.

Finnair chart illustration: 12,000 Avios for LHR–HEL plus 30,000 Avios for HEL–Tokyo equals 42,000 Avios in economy one way on Finnair-operated flights. Each segment’s surcharge, taxes and passenger fees are additional, and the sum is not a seat or checkout quote.

RevPoints or Amex: use the path, not just the ratio

BA, Qatar and Flying Blue publish 1:1 rates; Finnair still needs the live in-app ratio.

Use RevPoints when

  • You are booking BA, Qatar or Flying Blue at their published 1:1 rate.
  • You are considering Finnair and have copied its live ratio.
  • You have found the reward and the loyalty-account name and name order match your Revolut details.

Use Amex Membership Rewards when

  • You are transferring directly to BA, Qatar or Flying Blue and can meet that partner’s minimum and increment.
  • For Finnair, you can use the separate Amex → BA Avios → linked Finnair Plus path. Finnair Plus is not a direct UK Membership Rewards partner.
  • For that Finnair path, both accounts need matching details and two-factor authentication; the traveller must be 18 or over and the Finnair Plus account at least 30 days old.

Do not speculatively transfer. Find the reward seat and confirm the exact points price, cash component, passenger names, airport and transfer ratio first. RevPoints-to-airline redemptions and Amex partner transfers are final.

BA or JAL direct—and where the voucher works

British Airways direct

The HND map floor is for BA’s Reward Flight surface. An eligible BA Tokyo booking can use a BA Amex Companion Voucher: the companion uses no additional Avios, or a solo traveller gets a 50% Avios reduction. Cash charges remain payable per person.

Japan Airlines direct

A JAL flight booked with BA Avios is a partner redemption and may price differently by route, distance, date and cabin. Copy the live JAL points and cash total from BA before transferring. A BA Amex Companion Voucher cannot be used on JAL.

Voucher cabin rule: the free BA Amex voucher is economy-only; Premium Plus vouchers can be used in any cabin. The voucher is limited to eligible British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus Reward Flights—not JAL, Finnair, Qatar, Air France or KLM.

How to book London to Tokyo with points

Keep the route, currency and transfer decision in this order so a dated floor never becomes a false live quote.

  1. Choose the exact airport and carrier

Fix passengers, dates, cabin and whether the itinerary is BA or JAL direct to HND, Finnair via HEL, Qatar via DOH or Flying Blue via CDG/AMS.

  2. Search the reward before transferring

Record the live programme currency, points price and GBP charges for each passenger and direction. Search HND and NRT only where the selected path serves them.

  3. Compare direct and connecting paths

Keep BA’s HND floor, JAL partner pricing, Finnair segment pricing and dynamic Qatar/Flying Blue results separate.

  4. Calculate value and the shortfall

Compare the same-date cash fare and subtract reward cash charges: ((cash fare − reward charges) ÷ reward units) × 100 gives pence per unit.

  5. Confirm the transfer route

Check the live partner, ratio, minimum, increment, account details and timing. Complete Finnair’s linking conditions before relying on the indirect Amex path.

  6. Transfer only the shortfall and book

Recheck the seat immediately before moving points, then complete the reward booking when they arrive. Transfers are final and availability can change.

London to Tokyo points FAQs

How many Avios do I need from London to Tokyo?

Verified 19 July 2026, the official Avios map lists London airports to Tokyo Haneda from 38,500 Avios + £120 one way in economy, per person. It can change without notice and is a planning floor, not a live quote or availability claim.

How many RevPoints do I need to fly from London to Tokyo?

At the currently published 1 RevPoint = 1 Avios British Airways rate, the dated HND floor starts at 38,500 RevPoints. Confirm the seat, price and in-app ratio first because transfers are final.

How many UK Amex points do I need for Tokyo?

UK Membership Rewards currently transfer to British Airways Avios at 1:1, so the dated HND floor starts at 38,500 Membership Rewards points. The live seat may cost more, and the 1,000-point minimum plus 500-point transfer increments still apply.

Does the 38,500 Avios price include Narita?

No. The official map entry is for Tokyo Haneda, HND. A Narita itinerary, Japan Airlines partner flight or connecting route must use the points and cash total from the current search.

Can I use RevPoints for Finnair, Qatar or Flying Blue to Tokyo?

Revolut's current UK list includes Finnair Plus, Qatar Privilege Club and Flying Blue. Qatar and Flying Blue each publish a 1:1 RevPoints rate; for Finnair, copy the exact ratio from the live Revolut transfer screen. Recheck every final transfer screen before moving points.

Can I use Amex points for Finnair to Tokyo?

Finnair Plus is not a direct UK Membership Rewards partner. You can transfer Amex points to British Airways Avios at 1:1 and then move Avios to a linked Finnair Plus account at 1:1, subject to Finnair's age, account-age, matching-details and two-factor-authentication rules.

Is BA or JAL better for an Avios flight to Tokyo?

There is no universal winner. Compare the same date and cabin: BA's own Reward Flight price and Companion Voucher eligibility differ from a JAL partner redemption booked with BA Avios, and both require current seat and cash-charge checks.

Can I use a BA Companion Voucher on Japan Airlines?

No. A BA Amex Companion Voucher is limited to eligible British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Reward Flights. It cannot be used on a JAL, Finnair, Qatar, Air France or KLM flight.

How does Finnair price London–Tokyo awards?

Finnair charges the London–Helsinki and Helsinki–Tokyo Classic award segments separately. Its current economy chart implies 12,000 + 30,000 = 42,000 Avios one way for Finnair-operated flights, before surcharges, taxes and fees; confirm the itinerary in the live search.

When do BA reward seats to Tokyo become bookable?

British Airways reward bookings can be made up to 355 days before departure. Reward bookings remain subject to availability and capacity controls, so 355 days is an opening window, not a promise that a particular Tokyo seat will be available.

When do Finnair award seats to Tokyo become bookable?

Finnair says Finnair-operated Classic award seats become available through all channels 360 days before departure. Its published minimum-seat rules have exceptions and do not guarantee a complete London connection for the user's date.

Should I transfer RevPoints or Amex points before finding a Tokyo seat?

No. Find the seat and confirm the exact airport, operating carrier, points, cash charges, passenger names and transfer ratio first. RevPoints airline-mile redemptions and Amex partner transfers are final.
