RevPoints vs Amex Membership Rewards: which earns more?

For most UK spenders, an American Express card earns more reward value per pound than Revolut RevPoints, because credit cards earn faster. Amex Membership Rewards earn about 1 point per £1 (worth roughly 1p each transferred to Avios), while RevPoints earn from 1 per £10 on Standard up to 1 per £1 on Ultra. RevPoints only pull ahead on the Ultra plan. But Revolut needs no credit check, has no fee on lower tiers, and is better abroad, so many people use both.

Who should pick which?

Choose RevPoints if you want rewards without a credit check, spend a lot abroad (Revolut has no FX fees on eligible plans), or are already on Metal or Ultra.

Choose Amex if you can pass a credit check, pay your balance in full each month, and want to earn transferable points faster on everyday UK spend.

Or use both: put spend on Amex where it is accepted, and use Revolut everywhere else and abroad. Both transfer to Avios, so the points can pool at the airline.

FAQ

Do RevPoints and Amex points both transfer to Avios?

Yes. RevPoints convert up to 1:1 to the British Airways Club (Avios), and Amex Membership Rewards also transfer 1:1 to Avios, so both can top up the same Avios balance.

Which earns more, Revolut Metal or an Amex Gold card?

On like-for-like spend, Amex Gold (1 point per £1) generally earns more points than Revolut Metal (1 point per £2). Revolut only out-earns a 1-point-per-£1 Amex on the Ultra plan.

Is Revolut or Amex better for spending abroad?

Revolut, on eligible plans, for fee-free currency exchange. Amex is less widely accepted outside the UK and can carry foreign transaction fees.
